Improving Window Switching Interfaces

چکیده
We want to make a window switching interface where the most popular items are bigger, because big things are easier to hit. * SCOTZ means Spatially COnsistent Thumbnail Zones * It supports rapid switching to applications (by zones) and windows (by thumbnails) * It is shown full screen when you press a special function key * Repetitiveness: The more you use an item, the bigger it gets * Spatial constancy: Items stay (roughly) in the same place * You quickly learn the location of items; no more searching! *

Improving Task Switching Interfaces
Most interfaces for switching between tasks require slow, visual searches of candidates, where each candidate must be scanned in turn. We developed a logging tool for task switching actions and undertook a log-based study with eleven participants to empirically characterise task-switching behaviour, finding Zipfian distributions for window and application switching, and significant differences ...
متن کاملBuffer Management in the Sliding-Window (SW) Packet Switch for Priority Switching
Switch and router architectures employing a shared buffer are known to provide high throughput, low delay, and high memory utilization. Superior performance of a shared-memory switch compared to switches employing other buffer strategies can be achieved by carefully implementing a buffer-management scheme. A buffer-sharing policy should allow all of the output interfaces to have fair and robust...
متن کاملNavigation Patterns and Usability of Overview+Detail and Zoomable User Interfaces for Maps
The literature on information visualizations establishes the usability of overview+detail interfaces, but for zoomable user interfaces, results are mixed. We compare overview+detail and zoomable user interfaces to understand the navigation patterns and usability of these interfaces. Thirty-two subjects solved navigation and browsing tasks on maps organized in one or multiple levels. We find no ...
متن کاملKeynote: Revisiting the Human as an Information Processor
In their seminal 1983 book ́The Psychology of Human– Computer Interaction ́, Card, Newell and Moran (ACM Fellows and Turing Award winners) introduced ‘the model human information-processor’. This model equipped interface designers with strong theoretical tools to predict human interface performance without the demands of implementation and evaluation. In the quarter century since then, human–com...
متن کاملRouting in Multi-Channel Multi- interface Ad Hoc Wireless Networks
Wireless technologies, such as IEEE 802.11, that are used for ad hoc networks provide for multiple non-overlapping channels. Most ad hoc routing protocols that are currently available are designed to use a single channel. The available network capacity can be increased by using multiple channels, but this requires the development of new protocols specifically designed for multi-channel operatio...
